Short answer
Litchfield's 2025 total property tax rate was $14.20 per $1,000 of assessed value, lower than Hudson's $17.11 and Nashua's $16.83. The difference is mostly in the town (municipal) part of the rate, not the school part. Because each town assesses at its own level, compare actual tax bills on the homes you're considering, not just the rates.
How does each town's rate break down?
New Hampshire's total rate has four parts, set each fall by the NH Department of Revenue Administration:
| 2025, per $1,000 | Litchfield | Hudson | Nashua | Londonderry | Merrimack |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Town or city | $2.62 | $5.57 | $7.19 | $3.53 | $4.38 |
| County | $0.88 | $1.12 | $1.01 | $0.58 | $1.33 |
| State education | $0.97 | $1.25 | $1.15 | $1.08 | $1.44 |
| Local education | $9.73 | $9.17 | $7.48 | $9.28 | $14.96 |
| Total | $14.20 | $17.11 | $16.83 | $14.47 | $22.11 |
Litchfield's local school rate is close to Hudson's, and higher than Nashua's. Its town portion, $2.62, is less than half of Hudson's and well under Nashua's. A city like Nashua runs more of its own services, and that shows up in the municipal share.
Does a lower rate mean a lower tax bill?
Not always. The bill is the rate times the home's assessed value, and towns assess at different levels and revalue on different schedules. A town with a lower rate but higher assessments can end up with a similar bill. That's why Tom works from the actual assessment on the home you're buying, which the town's assessing office or online database shows.
What does Litchfield's rate mean on a monthly payment?
About $118 a month for each $100,000 of assessed value. On a home assessed at $400,000, that's about $473 a month in property tax, compared with about $570 at Hudson's rate and $561 at Nashua's on the same assessment. The buying power tool shows how far one monthly budget goes in each town.
When will the 2026 rates be set?
The DRA sets each town's rate in the fall. Litchfield's 2025 rate was set on October 30, 2025, among the earlier towns. Tom updates the site's town pages as the new rates come out.
