New to Litchfield, NH: a newcomer's checklist
Just moved to Litchfield, or about to? Here are the first things to take care of, each with a link to the official town page. Town Hall is at 2 Liberty Way, and the Town Clerk/Tax Collector's office handles car registrations, dog licenses and voter registration. Checked against the town's website on October 30, 2026.
Get your NH driver's license and register your car
New Hampshire law gives new residents 60 days after establishing residency to get a New Hampshire driver's license (RSA 263:35); licenses are handled by the NH Division of Motor Vehicles. Car registrations start at the Town Clerk/Tax Collector's office. If you're registering a vehicle in your name in Litchfield for the first time, the town asks you to arrive at least 20 minutes before closing for each vehicle. Office hours: Monday 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday to Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. to noon; phone 603-424-4045.
Property tax bills
Litchfield's 2025 total rate is $14.20 per $1,000 of assessed value (NH DRA). The town revalued every property for 2025 to bring assessments to 100% of market value. You can look up and pay bills on the NH Tax Kiosk. If your mortgage company pays through escrow, forward any bill you get to them.

Trash and recycling (transfer station)
Litchfield residents take trash and recycling to the transfer facility at 1 Recycling Way. Hours: Wednesday noon to 7 p.m., Thursday 7 a.m. to noon, Friday noon to 7 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. to noon (lower area only, brush and demolition; closed December 1 through March 1). Household hazardous waste goes to collection days run by the Nashua Regional Planning Commission. The transfer station is for Litchfield residents only, and vehicles need a sticker, which you can get at the transfer station (town users guide, checked October 30, 2026).
Water: Pennichuck or a private well?
Some Litchfield homes are on public water from Pennichuck and some have private wells. Parts of town are in the state's Saint-Gobain PFAS consent decree area, so if your home has a well, NHDES recommends regular testing with an accredited lab.
Dog license
Dogs 4 months and older must be licensed every year (RSA 466:1). Litchfield licenses go on sale January 1 and are due April 30; bring the dog's current rabies certificate. A late fee starts June 1.
Library card
Aaron Cutler Memorial Library cards are free for Litchfield residents, property owners, people who work in town, and students 5 and older at a Litchfield school. Register online or at the library with ID and proof of a Litchfield address.
Registering to vote
Register in person at the Town Clerk's office before Election Day, or with the Supervisors of the Checklist at the polls on Election Day. Bring a valid driver's license, passport or birth certificate and proof of domicile (if you're already registered in another NH town, your NH license or passport plus proof of domicile).
Schools
Litchfield's public schools are run by the Litchfield School District; enrollment information is on the district's website.
Building or renovating
Many projects need a permit, and Litchfield takes building permit applications online.
Your first year as a homeowner
- Escrow: if your lender pays your taxes and insurance, your first escrow review usually comes about a year after closing. A tax increase can change the payment; Tom can explain any escrow letter.
- Abatement: if your assessment looks too high, the application is generally due by March 1 after the year's final tax bill.
- Refinancing later: keep your closing documents; they speed up any future refinance.
