New to Wilton, NH: a newcomer's checklist
Just moved to Wilton, or about to? Here are the first things to take care of, each with a link to the official town page. Town Hall is at 42 Main Street (603-654-9451), and the Town Clerk/Tax Collector's office there handles car registrations, dog licenses, voter registration and tax payments. Checked November 2, 2026.
Get your NH driver's license and register your car
New Hampshire gives new residents 60 days after moving to the state to change to a New Hampshire driver's license (RSA 263:35), handled by the NH Division of Motor Vehicles. Registrations for newly purchased vehicles are done in person at the Town Clerk's office during walk-in hours: Monday and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bring your current registration. Renewals, registration estimates, dog re-licensing and tax and water/sewer payments can be done online.
Property tax bills
Wilton's 2025 total rate is $26.98 per $1,000 of assessed value (NH DRA), about $2,698 a year or $225 a month for each $100,000 of assessed value. If your mortgage company pays through escrow, forward any bill you get to them.
Recycling center
Wilton's recycling center is at 291 Gibbons Highway (Route 101) and is shared with Lyndeborough, Temple, Greenville and Mason. Hours: Tuesday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 8 to 11 a.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fees apply for demolition, construction and electronics; cards are accepted with a convenience fee.
Water and sewer
Some parts of Wilton are served by town water and/or sewer. If yours is, make sure the town has your name and mailing address as the new owner. Other homes have a private well and septic system, so ask which a home has before you buy.
Dog license
Dogs 4 months and older must be licensed. Wilton licenses run May 1 to April 30; bring the rabies certificate (and the spay/neuter certificate if it applies).
Library
The Wilton Public and Gregg Free Library is in the historic brick building on Forest Street.
Registering to vote
Wilton has one voting district, and voting takes place at Town Hall. Register with the Town Clerk, bringing proof that you live in town, such as a utility bill or lease, or register at the polls on Election Day.
Schools
Wilton's public schools are part of the Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative School District (SAU 63).
Your first year as a homeowner
- Escrow: your first escrow review usually comes about a year after closing; with Wilton's rate, a change in the tax bill can move the payment noticeably, so read the escrow letter when it comes.
- Abatement: if your assessment looks too high, the application is generally due by March 1 after the year's final tax bill.
- USDA: Wilton was entirely inside USDA's eligible rural area when Tom checked USDA's map on October 30, 2026 (household income limits apply). See USDA-eligible towns in southern NH.
