New to Weare, NH: a newcomer's checklist
Just moved to Weare, or about to? Here are the first things to take care of, each with a link to the official town page. Town offices are at 15 Flanders Memorial Road, and the Town Clerk's office there handles car registrations, transfer station decals, dog licenses and voter registration. The town's New Resident Information sheet covers most of this list in one place. Checked October 31, 2026.
Get your NH driver's license and register your car
New Hampshire gives people moving from out of state 60 days to change their address with the state and get an NH driver's license (RSA 263:35); licenses are handled by the NH Division of Motor Vehicles. If you're moving from another NH town, you have 30 days to change your address (RSA 263:9). Car registrations start at the Town Clerk's office. Weare asks for:
- One proof of residency showing your name and Weare address: a utility bill in your name for service at the address, a lease or rental agreement or purchase and sale agreement, a notarized letter from the property owner, or a resident affidavit signed by you and the owner.
- Your current vehicle registration and ID (a valid driver's license, passport or military ID).
- For an owned vehicle, model year 2000 or newer: the out-of-state title (the town prepares an NH title application). For 1999 or older: the out-of-state registration and either a title or an NH VIN form completed by an NH inspection station or police officer.
- With a loan: your out-of-state registration and paperwork such as the bill of sale showing the lienholder's name and address, purchase date and current mileage; you'll sign a lienholder affidavit. Leased: your registration and the lease agreement.
Everyone listed on the vehicle paperwork must be there to sign the NH title application.
Property tax bills
Weare's 2025 total rate is $21.64 per $1,000 of assessed value (NH DRA). Weare bills can be looked up and paid on the NH Tax Kiosk. If your mortgage company pays through escrow, forward any bill to them.
Trash and recycling (transfer station)
Weare residents use the Transfer Station at 225 Merrill Road. To use it you need a decal from the Town Clerk's office: bring a current vehicle registration showing your Weare address for the vehicle that will carry the decal. New residents who don't have NH plates yet, and seasonal residents, need the current registration and proof of their Weare residence. Hours and what's accepted are on the transfer station's page.
Water and septic
Before you buy, ask whether a home has a private well and a septic system, and ask the seller for recent water test results and septic records. Septic work needs a town permit (see Building, below).
Dog license
Dogs over 4 months old must be registered by April 30 each year (RSA 466:1); you can register for the current year as early as January 1. Weare needs current rabies information (tag number and expiration date, showing the vet who gave the shot); the town's system won't license a dog without it. Late fees start June 1.
Library card
Weare Public Library is at 10 Paige Memorial Lane (603-529-2044). To get a card, visit the library with a valid photo ID, such as a driver's license; if it doesn't show your current Weare address, also bring proof of address, such as a recent utility bill or piece of mail. Cards can't be signed up for online.
Registering to vote
There's no minimum time you need to have lived in the state before you register. Register at the Town Clerk's office during regular business hours, at a Supervisors of the Checklist meeting, or on Election Day (the town recommends registering ahead of time). Bring proof of identity, citizenship and domicile in Weare; the town notes an NH Real ID license is not proof of U.S. citizenship.
Building or renovating
You need a permit for any new construction, demolition, renovation, alteration or change of use, and for septic work. Building permit applications go to the Building Department at 15 Flanders Memorial Road (603-529-7586).
Your first year as a homeowner
- Escrow: if your lender pays your taxes and insurance, your first escrow review usually comes about a year after closing. A tax increase can change the payment; Tom can explain any escrow letter.
- Abatement: if your assessment looks too high, the application is generally due by March 1 after the year's final tax bill (RSA 76:16).
- Keep your closing documents: they speed up any future refinance.
