Nashua, New Hampshire

New to Nashua, NH: a newcomer's checklist

Just moved to Nashua, or about to? Here are the first things to take care of, each with a link to the official city page. Most city services are at City Hall, 229 Main Street. Checked October 31, 2026.

Get your NH driver's license and register your car

New Hampshire gives new residents 60 days after establishing residency to get an NH driver's license (RSA 263:35); licenses are handled by the NH Division of Motor Vehicles. Nashua's Motor Vehicle Registration office at City Hall registers cars as a municipal agent for the state, so most transactions happen in one place. New residents (from another state or another NH town) book an in-person appointment online, up to two weeks ahead; renewals are walk-in only. Questions: 603-589-3200 or mvr2@nashuanh.gov.

Property tax and sewer bills

Nashua's 2025 total rate is $16.83 per $1,000 of assessed value (NH DRA). The city's Tax & Wastewater Collections office handles property tax and sewer (wastewater) bills, which can be viewed and paid online; a new bill format started with the first 2026 bills. If your mortgage company pays through escrow, forward any bill to them. Questions: 603-589-3190.

Trash and recycling

The Solid Waste Department collects most residential trash in automated carts, with single-stream recycling every other week on your trash day (Week A or Week B), out by 6:45 a.m. Leave 3 feet between carts and bins. The city's map tool shows your schedule. The Four Hills Landfill and Nashua Recycling Center is at 840 West Hollis Street.

Water

Pennichuck Water Works, owned by the City of Nashua, supplies public water in the city; its office is at 25 Walnut Street. Some homes on the city's edges may differ, so ask how a home gets its water before you buy.

Dog license

Dogs 4 months and older must be licensed every year by April 30 (RSA 466:1), with proof of a current rabies vaccination, through the City Clerk's office, online or by mail.

Library card

Nashua Public Library is at 2 Court Street.

Registering to vote

Register with the City Clerk's office, or at the polls on Election Day. You must be 18 or older on election day, a U.S. citizen and domiciled in Nashua; bring proof of identity, age, citizenship and domicile.

Schools

Nashua's public schools are run by the Nashua School District; enrollment and registration information is on its website.

Your first year as a homeowner

  • Escrow: your first escrow review usually comes about a year after closing; a tax change can change the payment.
  • Abatement: if your assessment looks too high, the application is generally due by March 1 after the year's final tax bill.
  • Keep your closing documents: they speed up any future refinance.
