New to Milford, NH: a newcomer's checklist

Just moved to Milford, or about to? Here are the first things to take care of, each with a link to the official town page. The Town Clerk's office is in the foyer of the main entrance to Town Hall on Nashua Street, and it's closed on Fridays. The transfer station is for Milford residents only and needs a free permit. Checked October 30, 2026.

Get your NH driver's license and register your car

New Hampshire gives new residents 60 days after establishing residency to get an NH driver's license (RSA 263:35); licenses are handled by the NH Division of Motor Vehicles. Car registrations start with the Town Clerk. Hours: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., closed Friday. Renewals can be done online (E-Reg).

Property tax bills

Milford's 2025 total rate is $25.93 per $1,000 of assessed value (NH DRA), higher than most nearby towns, mostly because of its local school share. Bills can be viewed and paid online. If your mortgage company pays through escrow, forward any bill to them.

Recycling and transfer station

The Recycling and Transfer Station at 76 North River Road is open to Milford residents only, and a permit is required. The permit is free: call the transfer station or stop at the scale house during open hours. Residential hours: Tuesday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m. to noon, Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (demolition materials until 3 p.m.). It's normally closed Mondays, so Monday holidays are observed on Tuesday.

Water and sewer

Milford Water Utilities bills water and sewer from its office on Nashua Street (Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). As of October 23, 2026, water and sewer payments are no longer accepted at the Town Hall drop boxes: bring them to the Wastewater Treatment Facility at 564 Nashua Street or mail them to Milford Water Utilities, P.O. Box 7007, Milford, NH 03055-7007. Homes outside the town system use private wells or septic, so ask which a home has before you buy.

Dog license

Dogs 4 months and older must be licensed every year in the town where they live (RSA 466:1). Milford offers online dog licensing through the Town Clerk's page; have the dog's current rabies certificate.

Library card

Wadleigh Memorial Library cards are free to Milford residents, students and people who work in Milford: apply at the circulation desk. The library also offers passport and notary services and discounted museum passes.

Registering to vote

Register with the Town Clerk, or with the Supervisors of the Checklist at the polls on Election Day. Bring proof of identity, age, citizenship and domicile.

Your first year as a homeowner

  • Escrow: your first escrow review usually comes about a year after closing; with Milford's rate, a change in the tax bill can move the payment noticeably, so read the escrow letter when it comes.
  • Abatement: if your assessment looks too high, the application is generally due by March 1 after the year's final tax bill.
  • USDA: Milford was entirely inside USDA's eligible rural area when Tom checked USDA's map on October 30, 2026 (household income limits apply). See USDA-eligible towns in southern NH.
