Can lenders use VantageScore 4.0 for a mortgage now?

House keys handed over above a stack of moving boxes

Short answer

Yes, for conventional loans sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. In September 2026 they opened VantageScore 4.0 to all approved lenders, after a limited start in April 2026. Lenders can use VantageScore 4.0 or Classic FICO, Classic FICO has no retirement date yet, and lenders still pull reports from all three credit bureaus.

What changed in 2026?

For years, loans sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac used Classic FICO scores. The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which oversees both, approved VantageScore 4.0 as another option. The rollout started with a limited group of lenders in April 2026 and expanded to every approved lender in September 2026, without the earlier written approval step.

Will my score be different?

It can be. VantageScore and FICO are different scoring models, so the same credit report can produce a different number in each. The scores you see in a banking or credit app are also often a different model from the ones mortgage lenders use, so treat them as a guide, not the number a lender will see.

Do lenders still check all three credit bureaus?

Yes, for now. FHFA says adding VantageScore 4.0 doesn't change the current credit report requirements. A plan to allow reports from two bureaus instead of three was postponed in January 2025 to a date not yet set.

Does this apply to FHA, VA and USDA loans?

The FHFA change covers loans sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. FHA is following: for FHA case numbers assigned on or after January 1, 2027, lenders can use VantageScore 4.0 and FICO 10T as well as Classic FICO (HUD Mortgagee Letter 2026-11). See FHA adds new credit scores in 2027. VA and USDA loans follow their own agencies' rules and each lender's policies, so ask which score model applies to the program you're considering.

What should I do before I apply?

  • Check your reports from all three bureaus for free at AnnualCreditReport.com and dispute any errors.
  • Keep balances low and pay every account on time.
  • Hold off on new credit cards or loans until after closing.

The credit and your mortgage guide covers each step.
