Do you need to lift a credit freeze to get a mortgage?

House keys handed over above a stack of moving boxes

Short answer

Yes. A credit freeze blocks new lenders from seeing your credit file, so you need to lift it before a lender can pull your credit for a pre-approval or application. Mortgage lenders usually check all three bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, so lift the freeze at each one. A temporary lift requested online or by phone has to be processed within an hour, and freezes are free and don't affect your scores.

Why does a freeze stop a mortgage?

A freeze, also called a security freeze, keeps prospective creditors from viewing your credit file, which makes it harder for an identity thief to open accounts in your name. A mortgage lender is a new creditor, so the credit pull fails until you lift it. Most mortgage lenders look at reports and scores from all three bureaus.

How do I lift it?

Log in to each bureau's website or call them, and choose a temporary lift for a set period. Online and phone requests must be processed within one hour; mailed requests within three business days. Pick a window that covers your pre-approval, and plan to lift it again before closing, because lenders often recheck credit shortly before then.

When should I lift it?

Right before you apply or get pre-approved, and ask Tom when the credit check will happen. Starting a conversation with Tom doesn't pull your credit; a credit check happens only when you apply. See how pre-approval works.

Will lifting a freeze bring calls from other lenders?

Calls after a mortgage credit check usually come from trigger leads, not from the freeze itself. New federal limits on trigger leads took effect in 2026; see credit and your mortgage. You can also opt out of prescreened offers.

Should I freeze it again after closing?

Many people do. Once your loan closes, you can put the freeze back in place at each bureau for free. It won't affect your new mortgage or your scores.
